Book Review - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

I recently read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.
My first impression - A bit annoyed with the style of the book. The entire story is letters written between the characters. I felt like it was the ultimate in telling instead of showing.
Why I kept reading - Many people had recommended the book and I really enjoyed the spunk of Juliet, the main character.
When did I fall in love with the book - About halfway through. The characters were delightful. And even though I didn't love the letter-style, the authors did an amazing job of making it a great story even though you weren't "living in the moment."
I never felt like I couldn't set the story down and walk away, but I did adore the characters and learning about Guernsey and I cheered at the end.
I believe everyone should read this book. It is touching and taught me many things.

  1. I really liked this book too. It inspired me to read 84 Charing Cross Road. :)

  2. I'll have to find that one. Thanks for the suggestion,

  3. My book club really liked this one. It's true that at first it does take some getting used to because it is written entirely in letters. But the story is a good one. Here is my review:

I love comments! Thanks for taking the time to make me feel happy.
