Mommy Brain

All pregnant women can attest to the fact that the brain is a bit mushy during pregnancy. I knew that I would be forgetful and not be productive with my writing throughout pregnancy, but my baby is three months old and I am still a mess. I sat down to work on my manuscript the other night and it was like I'd completely forgotten how to write. I finally gave up when I couldn't think of any way to describe one of the characters except "huge." Robin Elise Weiss, wrote an article for About.com about Placenta Brains and she claimed it could take up to six months after birth to return to normal. At this point I'm just praying my mind comes back. Anyone else suffered from Mommy Brain? Did the lost brain cells come back?

  1. Cami, I've never had a baby, but this happens to me when I get tired and stressed. I imagine you are both of these things, as happy as the event was. It seems like it always passes, though if I'm just patient. Good luck!

  2. I hate Mommy Brain during pregnancy and I get it bad--I can't remember anything while I'm pregnant! So I think I understand your frustration with wanting your brain back. :)
Do you know what helps me? I like to write in my journal all about my baby's birth with my thoughts, feelings, good descriptive words, etc. You could try that because it's a wonderful thing to leave for posterity or maybe just try some free-write exercises. No pressure, just fun writing. I agree with Braden's comment--stress kills the writing bug. I hope those help. Good luck!

  3. I totally hear you. My baby is also 3 mos. old. And I feel like I'm never going to get back into the mode of writing.

  4. Thanks for the advice and for understanding. I'm actually okay with being brain-dead because then I can just focus on enjoying my cute boys and not worried about making time to write all the ideas in my head!

  5. My baby is 2 years old, and I still feel like this most of the time. Maybe for his 18th birthday I will return to normal.

    Good luck with your MSS!
