The Help by Kathryn Stockett

I finally made time to read The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I thought it was phenomenal. I loved the characterization, the theme, the setting, the story. As you read a book like The Help it's impossible not to come up with your own ideas about how to change some of the heartbreak and prejudices in this world. The thought that kept coming back to me was that change has to be from inside. As we each try to be less judgmental and selfish and more loving and kind we'll treat people the way the Savior would. In my opinion that's when true change will come. The other thought I kept having was I didn't want to be a rotten, neglectful mother like some of the women portrayed in the book so I was a lot more conscientious about how I responded to my wild boys. If you haven't read The Help I definitely recommend it. If you have, what ideas came to you as you read?

  1. I loved The Help. I read it last year and so it's hard to remember the details. I reviewed it on my blog, but the thing I took with me is that I shared things in common with each of the characters. No matter how great or how awful they were I identified with them. I think that is what made the book so great!

  3. Thanks Alice and Laura. I agree with you, Alice, it scared me that I shared characteristics with the awful Mom! Good motivator to not think cleaning my floor is more important than playing with my boys.
