Book Giveaway - What to Expect

I feel very lucky to host this giveawy of the What to Expect book series. They have agreed to giveaway two copies each of What to Expect When You're Expecting, What to Expect the First Year, and What to Expect the Second Year. Wow. I was so flattered and excited when the director of the What to Expect series contacted me. I have read and re-read my now outdated copy of What to Expect When You're Expecting (I've been having babies for 14 years!). How fun to have the entire series. The Second Year is coming in handy with a wild and fun 20mo. Now I just have one request: What to Expect When Your Angelic Baby Becomes a Teenager. Shall we all petition Heidi Murkoff to write that one? Please!

I'm finally getting with technology and using Rafflecopter for this giveaway. If it doesn't work for you, please leave a comment below. Thanks.

I Am a Writer

I signed my 13yo up for football yesterday. He told me, "I play football but I am a lacrosse player." I guess his lacrosse coaches explained that he should give any sport he plays his all but he was always in his heart a lacrosse player.
This morning I finally decided that I am a runner. I ran 14 miles up Smithfield Canyon with a broken toe after not running for 2 1/2 weeks. I also need to mention that it was hot, windy, I drank from a stream that will probably give me giardia, and at mile two I had to remove my toe wrappings because they were rubbing and my sock was full of blood.
Blood, sweat, and dirty creek water. Yeah, man. I am a runner!
It's funny that I've done two marathons and numerous other races but when people ask me if I am a runner I always say, "No, I'm a weight-lifter who runs." Today I converted to running.
I also remember the day I decided I was a writer. It wasn't when one of my books released or when I spoke to some group about writing and felt like I actually had a fan. It was in a workshop where the presenter asked us to write on a full piece of paper, "I AM A WRITER!" From that day on I was committed.
What about you? What things can you say, I Am... about? What are you wholly committed to that nobody could talk you out of?

Keep Dreaming

Theodore Roosevelt said, “Nothing worth gaining was ever gained without effort.”

Everyone has talents and dreams. We all have creative ability. Maybe you love to cook, garden, draw, write, sing, or dance. Whatever your talent, you need to believe in yourself and you need to work hard to succeed.

The greatest lesson I’ve learned from being a writer is to not give up on your dreams. Never, ever give up. Sometimes you have to tweak things a bit. Sometimes you have to try a different route to your dreams, but if you give up, you’ll never make it.

Think about a dream you have or a talent you'd like to develop. Make some goals to accomplish it and get to work. The world would be nothing without the dreamers.

What's your dream?

New Floor

We had a little water leak that ruined our entire kitchen flooring. The insurance decided since the wood was continuous through most of the upstairs they would have to replace the entire floor. I was so excited to pick a new wood and update our house. It's going to be fabulous when it gets done but I've spent the past week picking out materials and trying to keep the rest of my house clean as they tear apart my flooring.
I usually think I'm a pretty upbeat person but having my house ripped up has been tough on me. I can't focus on my writing and I really just want to stay outside with my boys and eat ice cream. You can all laugh at me and tell me I'm pathetic because I know this is a silly thing to complain about. It's going to turn out great and in a few weeks (after I get the dust out of everything) I won't even remember why I was frustrated. But I need to know: when life gets chaotic can you keep your head in your story and keep writing or do you give yourself permission to take a break and realize someday (like when we're 80) life will be calm and I'll be able to write to my heart's desire?

What to Expect

Isn't there an expression, "Lazy Days of Summer" or something like that. Does anybody's life actually slow down in the summer? Between camps, summer projects, yardwork, and nonstop playtime with buddies we are insane busy. A friend asked my 6yo if he was liking being out of school. He said, "No. All I do is jobs!" Doesn't his Momma wish that was the case.
But I do love summer, especially all the free labor with my boys out of school (haha). They are pretty good helpers and I figure some day their wives are going to appreciate them knowing how to scrub a toilet with a toothbrush.
The makers of What to Expect contacted me about doing reviews and giveaways of their books on my blog. How cool is that? I haven't read the What to Expect the Second Year so it will be perfect to reread the others and focus on the second year. Hopefully the book will teach me what to do about these 21mo temper tantrums!
I hope you're all having a fabulous summer. If you've found a way to slow it down, please let me know!
