Jack Templar: Monster Hunter by Jeff Gunhus

Tour Schedule

Jack Templar: Monster Hunter

Orphan Jack Templar has no memory of his parents and only the smallest details from his Aunt Sophie about how they died. The day before Jack's fourteenth birthday, things start to change for him. At first it's great: A sudden new strength helps him defend his nose-picking friend "T-Rex" from the school bully, and even his crush, Cindy Adams, takes notice. But then a mysterious girl named Eva arrives and tells him two facts that will change his life forever. First, that he's the descendent of a long line of monster hunters and he's destined to be in the family business. Second, that there's a truce between man and monster that children are off-limits...until their fourteenth birthday! Jack has only one day before hundreds of monsters will descend on his little town of Sunnyvale and try to kill him.

As if that weren't enough, things get even more complicated when Jack discovers that the Lord of the Creach (as the monsters are collectively known) holds a personal grudge against him and will do anything to see that Jack has a slow and painful death. To stay alive and save his friends, Jack will have to battle werewolves, vampires, harpies, trolls, zombies and more. But perhaps the most dangerous thing he must face is the truth about his past. Why do the other hunters call him the last Templar? Why do they whisper that he may be the "One?" Why do the monsters want him dead so badly? Even as these questions plague him, he quickly discovers survival is his new full-time job and that in the world of monster hunters, nothing is really what it seems.

My Review:

I loved the blurb on this book and was excited to read it with my 14yo son. Unfortunately, he found the book on my iPad and read it in less than an hour. He told me, "This is great, Mom, you should be able to read it really quick." So much for teenage/parent bonding time, I guess I'm going to have to go to plan B and actually watch the latest James Bond with him.
My son was right, even though I had to read it by myself, I really enjoyed the book. I found myself sneaking in reading time whenever the boys were busy. It's a fun, fast-paced, and scary book. I loved the author's voice and will definitely read more of his books, with my son, that is. Because of the violent nature of the book, I haven't allowed my 10yo to read it, but I'm a touch over-protective, hence the dragging my feet on watching James Bond!

WARNING

Yeah, you read it right. I’m a monster hunter. Back before I actually became one, I would have thought that sounded totally awesome. And don’t get me wrong, in a lot of ways it is. But most of the time, I’m either running for my life or hiding in the shadows, praying the monster chasing me doesn’t pick up my scent. And I’m almost always scared to death. In a few pages, I think you’ll see why.
But there are a few things I need to warn you about before I tell you my story.
First, this isn’t a cartoon. These are bloodthirsty creatures who will stop at nothing to kill. They are scary. Very scary. Second, the only way to stop them is to kill them first…and that gets gross and messy. Third, this is all real.
You think I’m kidding, don’t you? I can almost see you smirking as you read this. But this isn’t a joke. Monsters are real and the story I’m about to tell you really happened. If you’d rather walk through life believing that monsters are only found in books or on the movie screen, then you should shut this book right now and go do something else.
I give you these warnings because the story I’m about to tell you isn’t for everyone. Not everyone can handle it. The blood. The gore. The monsters.
This life was thrust onto me. I had no choice but to take up a sword and fight. But you can still walk away and pretend this dark world doesn’t exist. Or you can walk through the door that I’m about to open and find out the truth about the world around you.
But I warn you (and this is a big warning), if you read this book, if you learn about the monsters that roam among us and the hunters who fight them, if you decide to learn the truth, then you will become fair game for the monsters to chase.
Make sure you understand what I’m saying.
If you read this book, you will be part of this world and the monsters will come after you too. You will start to see things that no other humans can see. The shadows will move when you walk near them. The creatures of the night will seek you out, testing the doors and windows of your house, looking for a way in.
And, at some point, they will find you, just like they found me, and you will be forced to defend yourself.
So, think carefully before you turn the page, because once you do, there’s no turning back.
     Ever.
Once a monster hunter, always a monster hunter.
See you on the other side.
     If you’re brave enough.

Kirkus Reviews

"Gunhus brings young readers a monster-filled romp to read at their own risk. In the first few pages, Jack, the storyteller and main character, warns readers not to read about these real-world monsters that would seem to only exist in fiction. The tone is set--sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek and likable; rooting for Jack is easy...Gunhus masterfully introduces fully realized characters with whom readers can connect almost instantly. The pacing is quick but not rushed, and events seamlessly progress, complete with action, cliff-hangers and surprise reveals. "

Watch out Percy Jackson here comes Jack Templar
Move over Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, there's a new kid in town - Jack Templar, and he will take you on a wonderful adventure of good vs evil, with friends and enemies at every turn. The twists and turns keep the reader on a roller coaster of entertainment in the way of JK Rowling and Rick Riordan. ~ Penny Brein

Fast paced adventure through and through
Written for middle school aged students, this book is action-packed from the beginning and will hold the attention of young readers. Not only that, as an adult reader, it was hard to put down, so parents will enjoy it as an easy read. ~ bluejellybean

Kids will love it!
Not only will kids love it, adults will too! I don't want to give the plot away but this is a book worth reading. This book is creatively written drawing in the reader to be a participant in the story. There is lots of action with enough blood and guts to be interesting without being gross. Girls will like it too with the strong female role models and the hint of romance. Even though this is a children's book, I couldn't put it down. I will definitely be adding this to my classroom library. I am looking forward to reading the book in this series and sharing it with my students. Awesome book! ~ pixiep

Avoidance

Whenever I'm hosting a large party I find myself frantically cleaning out the deep freezer, scrubbing the master shower, or organizing the storage room - the parts of my house that no guest should be looking at. In my head if I don't deal with the most immediate issues on my to-do list, they will go away or I'll suddenly be granted more time to do them. Crazy, I know.
We're leaving on vacation Thursday afternoon and I promised myself I would have my newest manuscript polished and sent to the editor so I could relax on the beach with my boys (yeah). But instead of working on the manuscript I'm googling myself online, writing blog posts, and catching up on emails. Would somebody please tell me to get to work?

Teaching Boys to Work

My husband had a brilliant plan to hire our 14yo and 10yo to clean his office building. I knew from the first mention of this job that Mama would be doing much more cleaning than she wanted. But I agreed because it would not only give our 10yo a job, it would give our 14yo the opportunity to quit milking cows, which is a crappy job at anytime, but every Sunday for the past two years he's had to be up at four a.m. (and you can guess I had to be up to get him toast and drive him). Anyway, the cleaning was honestly not going to badly until last Saturday. I came out of the men's disgusting bathroom having spit-shined the toilet and my boys were sweeping and mopping the hall and having the greatest time messing around with their broom and mop. I got ticked off and told them I was done helping them: I was getting no compensation and they weren't even working hard or being grateful. I took my younger boys and bought them a treat. When I came back to pick up the big boys they kept saying thank you for helping them. I appreciated the gratitude, but that didn't stop me from having them scrub all the toilets in my house when we got home.
Today they asked their dad if he would please go with them to clean. I think I just got fired from my pro bono toilet scrubbing.

Heart of the Ocean - Review and Giveaway

Tour Schedule

Heart of the Ocean
by Heather B. Moore

A dark secret . . . a grieving ghost  . . . a handsome stranger  . . .
What more could Eliza Robinson want?
Except for maybe her life.

In Heather B. Moore’s enthralling 1840’s historical romance, Heart of the Ocean, Eliza Robinson has turned down the very pretentious Mr. Thomas Beesley’s marriage proposal. As a business partner of Eliza’s father, Thomas quickly discredits the family and brings disgrace to the Robinson name.

While her father scrambles to restore his good name in New York City, Eliza flees to the remote Puritan town of Maybrook to stay with her Aunt Maeve. Although relieved to be away from all- things-male and unforgiving gossip columns, odd things start to happen to Eliza, and she is plagued by a ghostly voice. Her aunt’s explanation? That Eliza is being haunted by a woman who died of a broken heart twenty years ago.

After Aunt Maeve is tragically killed, Eliza's life is put in danger as she tries to uncover the mystery of her aunt's death. She encounters Jonathan Porter in Maybrook, whose presence in the town seems suspicious, yet she finds herself drawn to him. When she discovers that Jonathan’s dark secrets may be the link between the dead woman who haunts her and her aunt’s murderer, Eliza realizes that Jonathan is the one man she should never trust.

My Review:
Heart of the Ocean is exactly the kind of book I love to read: romance, suspense, family drama, just a touch of parnormal. It is a very enjoyable clean romance. My only gripe: I wanted more of Jonathon and Eliza together. Loved, loved, loved their interactions. Oh, and twist at the end was completely unexpected. Love that too!
I would recommend this book to all who enjoy clean historical romance.

The Alias by Mandi Tucker Slack

After a long and difficult divorce, Jacey thinks the worst is over. Little does she know she'll soon be forced to go undercover to protect her family, and in the process, she'll risk losing her identity, her future, and her heart. With a lightning pace, a good dose of humor, and a plot that's full of suspense, this thrilling novel is an edge-of-your-seat read.

My Review:

As a mother I was immediately captivated by this book. My heart ached for Jacey and her son, Blaze. I loved seeing Blaze come out of his punk state (my 14yo lives here half of the time) and flourish on the ranch. Jacey's best friend, Melissa, was a fun character. She added a lot to the story. I'm hoping there's a sequel with Melissa as the protagonist.

It's always heartbreaking to read about women escaping an abusive relationship. The author did a good job of showing Jacey's recovery and growth. I loved the touching relationship between Jacey and Blaze. I loved feeling of home on the ranch. The plot was interesting, the pacing was good, and there was just the right amount of romance. Definitely my type of story.

10 Questions to Answer While Preparing For a Mission

10 Questions to Answer While Preparing For a Mission by Benjamin White

Book blurb:

Are you ready to be part of the greatest generation of missionaries? This book will give you the additional mental preparation and spiritual motivation necessary to answer this call. The 10 questions found in this book will help you look deep within yourselves to determine if you have sufficiently raised the bar in preparing for full-time missionary service.

Meet the Author:
Ben was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. He labored in the Colorado Denver North Mission and was employed at the MTC during college. Ben met his wife Keenan while they both were dancing with the International Folk Dance Ensemble at Brigham Young University. They each graduated from BYU with a degree in Family Science. Brother White is a seminary teacher and recently received his Master’s Degree in Religious Education from BYU where he wrote the history of Preach My Gospel. Ben and Keenan reside in Orem Utah with their 4 children.

My Review:
I was so excited when the author asked if I would review this book as I have four boys and their life plan goes as follows: Graduate high school, serve a mission, graduate college, marry a nice girl (who adores her mother-in-law), and have lots of cute babies (while still living close to said mother-in-law so she can babysit every Friday night).
This book has been an amazing tool for our family as we work with our boys to not only go on a mission but to be prepared body and soul and make the most of those two years of service. We've been reading a chapter every few nights out of 10 Questions to Answer While Preparing For a Mission. It has been a great experience as we discuss each chapter. The author is very direct about the preparation necessary for a mission but also very inspired as he talks about the most important aspect of preparation: a deep and abiding testimony of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
I truly love this book. I appreciate the author producing something that can help me as I raise these boys and help them prepare for not only their missions but the rest of their lives.

Spectator Mama

My husband took the older boys to register for the upcoming lacrosse season. Ah, I can just envision it now. The feeling of being a part of a team. The spring air, green grass, and welcome sunshine. All those fun friends enjoying spending time playing their favorite sport. My cute boys whacking the opposing team with a stick as I yell, "Knock that kid down! Come on, you're bigger than him, take him out!"

Lacrosse does not bring out the best in me. I usually think of myself as a pretty nice person, but put pads on my boys and a stick in their hands and I turn into some kind of evil, yelling spectator.
I beleive step one in reforming is being aware of the problem. Definitely aware I have a problem. Hopefully now we can proceed to the actual reforming part. Maybe this will be the year that I'll get in control of my mouth on the sidelines.

What brings out your worst side?

Alaina Claiborne by MK McClintock - $50 Giveaway

MK McClintock's Alaina Claiborne

Alaina Claiborne

How far would you go to avenge your family and save the one you love?

In nineteenth-century England, Alaina Claiborne had a loving family, a cherished friend, and devoted servants. She spent her days riding across the grassy hills of the English countryside, joyful and at peace.

Then tragedy strikes and her world is forever changed. Searching for those responsible is her only focus . . . until she meets Tristan.

Tristan Sheffield, a man of many talents, searches out those who don’t want to be found. His past is filled with secrets and deeds he would rather leave deeply buried. However, when his life unexpectedly entwines with Alaina's, he soon discovers they share more than a mutual desire to catch a murderer.

On their hunt for a man driven by greed, Tristan and Alaina find that love is the greatest weapon against evil, and they'll stop at nothing to survive.

(Excerpts may or may not be in the order in which they appear, and may differ slightly from the final book.)

Excerpt One:
Tristan had spent months negotiating with the lord, who decided to hold out for all he could the moment he realized who was interested in the property. Apparently, Lord Melbourne had been so deep in debt that he had no choice but to sell off his ancestral estate. Tristan knew a desperate man when he saw one and Lord Melbourne had been desperate. He eventually yielded to Tristan’s way of thinking and settled on a fair price. Tristan was happy to be rid of the man and even more pleased to find the daughter of Melbourne’s deceased neighbor in his own backyard. Tristan studied the object of his thoughts for a moment longer, trying to catch another glimpse of those revealing eyes. She declined to look at him, but he wanted a reaction from her—any kind of reaction would please him.
“It seems we will be neighbors.” He realized he had blundered when her spine stiffened and she turned toward him. Anger marred her lovely face, and he guessed she likely suffered from temper when the mood struck, as it seemed to be doing now.
“You, sir, may now own this property, but I assure you we will be neighbors in no other way except that we share a border. I see no reason why we should ever meet again.” With her back stiff and head held high, she turned to her impressively large stallion and mounted with surprising ease, her riding habit no hindrance to her. He wondered if she rode with as much confidence as she showed him right now—he thought she probably did.
“There is no reason why we can’t be civil to one another, Alaina. After all, I now own half of your favorite lake.” He couldn’t seem to stop saying all of the wrong things, but he was enjoying himself. She stared down at him from her elevated height and looked him over with a mixture of what he thought to be disgust and perhaps admiration. But there was only anger behind her next words.
“I have plenty of ponds on my own property.”
   “Then why are you here?”
“That, sir, is none of your business.” She turned the horse, spurred him forward, and once she broke through the trees, she sent the horse into a suicidal run, one which she surprisingly had complete control over. Tristan followed her with his eyes until she rode over the hill and out of sight.
“Interesting,” he murmured. “A most interesting woman.” He turned to his horse and stroked his muzzle. “What do you think, Admiral?”
The horse whinnied and nodded his head. “I agree, old boy,” he murmured and his gaze returned to the hill where she had been moments before. “I agree.” Tristan mounted his horse with equal ease and turned to continue the inspection of his property.

Excerpt Two:
Across the acres, darkness enveloped Alaina, her surroundings illuminated by the flickering flame of a lamp. She moved around in the attic, searching through trunks of the items that had come from her mother’s cottage in Ireland. It was difficult to see so many memories reminding her of her parents, but she also found it calmed her. She had avoided these things since they had been delivered years ago, but now her fears became secondary. She hoped something from her parents’ past might shed light on what was happening in the present. Alaina rummaged through a trunk of some of her mother’s clothes, pulling them out and smelling them, hoping for a faint whiff of the soft rose scent her mother used to wear. There was something lingering around the old clothes, and it took Alaina back to a time when she was a little girl. Nevertheless, the memory ended there. She paused for a moment, as if the scent reminded her of something else besides her mother. She subsequently released the memory when she saw the bottom of the trunk was not as deep as it should have been. She pulled out the remaining dress and ran her fingers along the bottom and edges. She next looked on the outside of the trunk. Nearly six inches of extra space remained near the bottom on the inside.
Alaina felt along the inside edges and became excited when she found a gap. Slowly reaching her fingers into the hole, she simultaneously pushed down on the other edge for leverage and surprised herself when the bottom tilted to reveal the extra space beneath. Removing the thin board, she set it aside and gasped when she turned back to the trunk.
“Oh, Mother. What did you do?”

A dark secret . . . a grieving ghost  . . . a handsome stranger  . . .

Nobody's Damsel by E.M. Tippetts

Chloe has finished her masters degree and taken a job as a forensic scientist back in her home town of Albuquerque, New Mexico, only the press will not leave her alone. They follow her to crime scenes and report on her every move, eager to show that her marriage to Hollywood A-lister, Jason Vanderholt, is on the brink of collapse. Millions of fans who dream of their own celebrity romance with him want this more than anything. This scrutiny comes at a particularly bad time as Chloe's first case is a crime against a child roughly the same age that Chloe was when she survived a homicide attempt.

Now that she sees the case from an adult's perspective, she realizes it's much harder than she ever dreamed. It's even worse for Jason, who is two steps removed from the crime. He must watch and try to support his wife as she battles with past demons and tries to keep up with a nameless suspect who evades identification and capture. Never has Jason been more frustrated with his job, its frivolities, and its lack of connection to the real world. When he storms off the set of his latest movie, the press goes wild with conjecture. Perhaps he never was anything more than a pretty face after all.

Together, Chloe and Jason must find their way past all the popping flashbulbs and through the dark maze of the criminal investigation to discover whether they can balance their professional goals with the demands of a celebrity marriage. The odds are entirely against them.

My Review:

I fell in love with E.M. Tippetts when I read Someone Else's Fairytale, the story of when Chloe and Jason meet. Nobody's Damsel is an amazing follow up to Someone Else's Fairytale. The romance keeps going strong, but this book is so much more as Chloe's job puts her through heartache and joy that she could never have foreseen. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to young adults on up.

The Circle of Tivedon by Ryan Shorten

Tour Sign-Ups: The Circle of Tivedon by Ryan Shorten

Attending Tivedon should have been the most exciting time in Jayl’s young life. Along with his sister Myah, they journey to Tivedon and are quickly caught up in the excitement and eccentricities of the school and its teaching elders known collectively as ‘The Circle of Tivedon’. Enemies and alliances are swiftly established between the other students that come from across the realm of Tiertyn. Yet, as they begin the next level of their scholastic study in the finer points of diplomacy and governance, grim tidings reach the castle walls. An ancient evil is on the rise threatening to plunge the land into darkness once again. Tensions begin to rise within the walls of Tivedon as unexplainable, dreadful events occur forcing the ‘Circle of Tivedon’ to act. The situation worsens as accusations of a traitorous plot involving friends of Jayl and Myah’s from back home and a fellow student’s sovereign land arrive at Tivedon. This development ensnares Myah in a conspiratorial and secretive undertaking at the behest of ‘The Circle of Tivedon’. Jayl, who discovers a temperamental magical source within himself, becomes the unwitting focal point of Tivedon’s elders’ plans to defend Tiertyn against the army of the resurrected evil Lord Rimyaroth. Unfortunately, before plans are complete, the suspicious death of one of Tivedon’s elders followed by the murder of the befriended Captain of the Guard lands an unjustly accused Jayl into Tivedon’s cells. It is here that Jayl learns of a long ago hidden talisman which will aid in their fight, which he must find and return. A hasty and harrowing escape from the school, which has fallen under the sway of the enemy, follows under the cover of darkness. With foes now swelling on all fronts, the elders must split the students into three groups to have any hope of stemming the tide that threatens them. Myah, along with one of the two remaining Tivedon elders, make their way to the city of Sieli. Their hope is to vindicate her captured and accused friends as well as turn the favour of an opportunistic King to their cause. The second group, led by the other Tivedon elder, races to join defenders that are hastily forming the first line of defence against the massing army of Lord Rimyaroth. Lastly, and much to Jayl’s chagrin, he is paired with two menacing and determined school rivals on his quest to find the talisman. A perilous mission, it remains the last vestige of hope to battle against the dark magic of Lord Rimyaroth. With the unlikely heroes and heroines heading in separate directions, three diverse journeys begin.

Excerpt:
The survivors of the ‘fight below Taful,’ as it came to be known, waited and watched as Calum regained his feet. He walked back through the carnage he had wrought. Not a word was spoken as he stopped a dozen yards from his friends. His eyes were still ablaze with tempered fury, his hair wild and the vestiges of his dance of death evident on his splattered hands and clothing. He was bleeding freely from his wounds. Heret was shaking, at a loss for words. Sir Salvren was the first to break the silence and Heret saw that there were tears in his eyes.
His voice was quiet but hoarse.
“Forgive me, Calum,” was all he said.

My Thoughts:
My 14yo and I started this book and both really enjoyed it. It reminded me of Harry Potter with the seemingly unconquerable villian, fun characters in a school setting, and the headmaster was screaming Dumbledore. Unfortunately between Christmas, the flu, strep throat, and bronchitis neither of us were able to finish the book. Tonight my son asked me, "Can I steal your iPad to read some more of that Circle book?" We are both intrigued and impressed by what we've read so far.
