She burst out laughing.
He grinned proudly, as if producing laughter from her was a huge accomplishment.
“Nashmadeitup.com …” She laughed harder. He joined in her laughter. As their laughter settled, she lifted a chocolate off a nearby tray and held it out. “You admitted you made up your facts, and it’s your favorite. A milk chocolate peanut butter square.”
His smile froze and he looked her over carefully. “How do you know what my favorite is?”
“You don’t remember?” she challenged, thinking about the evening he’d shown up at the store as she was closing and helped her dip chocolates. He’d escorted her home through a raging thunderstorm. She’d known, even as a teenager, that he could be her shelter from any of life’s storms. The next day, he’d had a cut on his cheek and when she asked him about it, he’d only said, ‘Worth it,’ while looking deeply into her eyes. Nash may not have been attractive to anyone else back then, but he’d always been fascinating to her.
“I do remember,” he admitted, rubbing at his jaw and ducking slightly, his blue eyes filled with a humility that touched her.
“I remember everything about you, Nash.”
Disbelief filled his gaze. He said nothing and still looked a little abashed. She didn’t like that.
“Not worth it?” she asked, planting her hands on her hips as if she were sassy when truly she wanted him to say it was worth it. The fact that he’d been hit for shirking his chores and spending a couple hours helping her, joking and making the work fun, and keeping her safe from the storm that night, broke her heart.
He straightened and his gaze drilled into her. Heat seared through her bones and made her blood feel like molten chocolate. “Still worth it,” he whispered.
Her stomach hopped and she had to clasp her hands together to keep from reaching out for him. Then she realized she’d squished the chocolate peanut butter in her hands. She held it up. “Drat. I’ll just … throw this away.”
He didn’t want to eat it and that was fine. She was impressed by his self-control and only wished it didn’t extend to stopping kissing or spending more time with her.
“No.” Nash’s hand darted out and wrapped around hers. Time stood still, and her heart beat high and fast. Nash’s grip softened, but the tingles on her flesh and the sparkles in the air only increased.
He very slowly lifted her hand, and the ruined chocolate peanut butter cup, to his lips. He guided her fingers to place the chocolate in his mouth, then closed his eyes and let the chocolate melt on his tongue, just as an appreciator of fine chocolate should.
Sallie wanted to tease him about savoring it, but she wasn’t quite ready to tease. Especially as he still held onto her hand and she didn’t want him to let go.
His eyes opened, heavy lidded, as if he was coming out of a beautiful dream. Chocolate could do that to her.
“Worth it?” she whispered.
“Yes,” he admitted huskily.
